Hello everyone! Today’s post is the first of a new series that I hope you will enjoy. Land of Books will bring to you some of my favourite books and the reasons why I like them so much. 🙂
Being a mother of three avid readers, I have had the pleasure of getting to know quite a few good examples of children’s literature. One of the authors that most captivates me (and my youngest daughter) is Robert Munsch.
Robert Munsch is a North American storyteller that has been writing children’s books for at least 3 decades. His first book was published in 1979.
My first Land of Books pick is the book that introduced our family to the work of Robert Munsch…

Purple, Green and Yellow by Robert Munsch
SUMMARY: Purple, Green and Yellow tells us the story of a little girl named Brigid who is an avid artist. And as any good artist knows, to colour good pictures, you need good markers! The story starts with Brigid asking her mother for markers just like her friends have.
Soon enough, the new markers are just not “cutting it” and Brigid asks for more markers of another kind. This cycle repeats itself several times, until Brigid decides to colour herself and the story takes another twist…
MY REVIEW: If I were to describe this book in one word, it would have to be “giggles”. Yes, you read it right: GIGGLES!
Since the first time we read this book, almost every page turning elicited giggles from my little girl. The same happened with the children in my former home daycare 🙂
The illustrations are very compelling and really complement the story. Although she is now 10, sometimes I still find my daughter browsing through the book, just to admire the colourful illustrations 🙂
Brigid, our main character, is a little girl that knows what she wants, when she wants it , and how she wants it; much like most of the little girls I’ve known (mine included)! Every time you turn the page, you can’t help but to wonder what she is going to come up with next.
This is definitely my daughter’s favourite book by Mr. Munsch and I have a feeling that it has lots to do with the fact that, when she was a toddler, she also decided to colour herself – with a permanent marker! 🙂 (NOTE: If this ever happens to you, be prepared to spend almost a week with a blue tinged little girl. Also, milk does wonders to clean carpets that get in the way of creativity!)
If you want to have a fun time with your little ones while reading a book, then this is definitely the book for you.

TEACHER TIPS: Purple, Green and Yellow would be an excellent addition to a classroom library. PreK and K teachers can use this book to introduce colours and/or clarify the “dos and don’ts” of using colouring supplies.
The story line is propitious for group discussions about the consequences of Brigid’s actions and could also be the perfect prompt for individualized introspection.
Because the story line keeps you guessing at what is going to happen next, this book is ideal to introduce the students to the concept of inference.
